Recently, one of our clients secured a small order for compressors through some of his personal connections. Fortunately, he found us during his supplier search. A couple of days ago, he asked me how a newcomer like him could get started in the compressor business. This client is mainly referring to household air conditioner compressors and common household refrigerator compressors.
I advised him to begin by learning the basics:
- What is a compressor?
- What are the types of compressors?
- What are the typical applications of compressors?
- Which compressor models are most commonly used in household air conditioners?
- What are the most common wattages for household refrigerator compressors?

Step 1:
Based on your financial resources, local business environment, and consumer buying habits of air conditioner compressors and freezer compressors, decide whether to start with an online store or a physical retail location.
Step 2:
This step is very simple but absolutely essential: you must be 100% certain about the compressor voltage and frequency in your target market. This is usually easy to figure out—since most people begin with their local market, you can simply check the power supply in your own home.
Step 3:
Open your phone’s map app and search for local refrigeration markets. Visit these markets and walk into the stores to observe which compressor brands are being sold and which refrigerants are most commonly used.
(If you’re unsure, check the labels on the compressors for markings like R410A, R22, R32, or R290 for air conditioner compressors. For refrigerator compressors, look for R600A, R134A, R290, or R404A. If you’re afraid you’ll forget, it’s a good idea to bring a pen and notepad with you.)
Step 4:

Step 5:
Share your observations and insights from the local refrigeration market with your trusted supplier. Let them recommend a few suitable models for you. At the beginning, avoid placing large orders—2 to 3 pallets is more than enough. This will ease both financial and sales pressure.

For example, if GMCC and LG rotary compressors are popular in the customer’s market, and the mainstream products are fixed-speed compressors with a voltage of 220V/50Hz using refrigerants R22 and R410A, I would recommend the following matched models:

At the same time, I always recommend that customers purchase a small quantity of Copeland scroll compressors. In my many years in this industry, I haven’t seen a market where Copeland scroll compressors aren’t used.

Step 6:
If you already have experience with imports, you can handle the logistics yourself. If not, once your order is confirmed, you can hire a local freight forwarder to handle the shipping from the supplier to your designated location. Alternatively, you can ask your supplier to offer DDP (Delivered Duty Paid) service.
